Botanical Dye Workshop

  • Cave Creek Farm 230 Jennings Road Trout Lake United States (map)

In this workshop, Elan Hagens will guide you in play with botanical colors from living and dried plant materials that have been locally foraged or grown. In addition to creating a bandana to take home, you will get to dye fabrics and items that will show the effects of dye on different materials. We will learn how to tie, dip and hammer layers of colors to produce one of a kind works of art. The joy of playing with botanical dyes is that a large range of colors can be achieved with one plant with fun science. It's like a treasure hunt in that no two items will be exactly the same.

What To Expect

You will leave this workshop with an exciting new perspective on color as we take advantage of the Pacific Northwest’s season of growth. Students should bring clothes that can get dye on them, a notebook and a pencil or waterproof pen to the farm.

Light fare from Cave Creek Farm Stand will be provided during the workshop.

Please feel free to arrive early if you wish to tour the grounds before class.

Space is limited.

Meet the Instructor

Elan Hagens, also known as Temptress Truffles, is a textile artist with a passion for applying her career of wild foraging into her projects. Born and raised in the PNW, her role as a forager and naturalist is strongly connected to the land, showing up in her bodies of work as a handspinner, weaver, knitter and dyer.  As an educator, she has had the opportunity to share her passions teaching workshops at several art retreats and events for the past decade.  She finds joy in seeing her students taking their new learned skills back home and making beautiful creations for themselves and loved ones.
